It came to my attention recently (when Untappd gave me a badge for being such a fanboy), that I’ve had quite a few different brews from Cigar City recently:
Vuja De (6/21)
A very dark saison, practically black. But still very light and easy-drinking on the first evening of summer. A collaboration with St. Somewhere (and it shows — this reminds me of their Pays du Soleil). Very tart, but balanced by a sweetness — but not malty sweet: the bottle mentions cane sugar, so I think that’s where it’s coming from. The sweetness provides a nice counterpoint to the very tart, cherry twang. A second drinking yielded more mixed results: we both soured on the blackcurrant flavor.
Tocobaga Red Ale (6/18)
Definitely hoppy, with a piney finish. Balanced with a smooth and mild malt. Wouldn’t have liked this a year ago, because of the hoppiness.
110k+OT Batch #4 Imperial Red Ale (6/17)
Very dark with highlights of dark red. Full malt with a strong balance of hops, both aromatic and bittering with a long smooth bitter finish.
Guava Grove Ale (6/14)
Very sour and tart — less subtle than some saison. No fruity taste, which I’d been worried about and kept me from trying this before now. I reacted negatively at first, but it grew on me over the pint, so I’d probably give it 4 stars in retrospect.
Table Saison (5/21)
Light and with just a hint of sourness, more like a Dupont than Sea Bass.
Maduro Brown Ale (5/20)
Very rich and malty, complex and subtle. One of the few Cigar City beers I’ve seen in 12oz. bottles. This is what I expect Newcastle to be, but in the end I think I like this much better.
Jose Marti Porter (5/19)
Intensely dark and rich porter, good for a slow-sipping.
Florida Cracker Wheat Ale (5/18)
Very fine wheat ale, but they ran out of it before I could get more. Luckily, I was able to get a growler when I visited Cigar City’s tasting room. A little more reedy twang than your average hefeweizen.
Big Sound Scotch Ale (4/29)
A fine example of Scotch ale: very malty, full bodied, with a peaty smokiness that rounds it out nicely. Wind thought it was too sweet, but I thought it was divine.
Bolita Brown Ale (4/11)
Very dark and rich, not your typical English brown ale. A little smoky.
Sea Bass (2/8)
The beer that made me a saison fan. I’d love to be able to get a bottle of this now that I’ve had more experience with this style and see how I like it now. Intensely sour, almost breaking through into a citrusy sweetness. Long lingering finish that rewards savoring each sip.
Of course, there are still quite a few Cigar City beers I haven’t had, notably their flagship IPA, which I can get on draft lots of places in town, in bottles and kegs, etc. And they’ve got a few dark beers (Improvisacion, Cubano-Style Espresso, etc.) that I haven’t gotten to. There were also a few beers on the board in their tasting room that I’d never heard of before (Xenu?). So I doubt I’ll run out of new stuff to try.
